Warriors 38–20 Cowboys in NRL Round 16 at One NZ Stadium, Christchurch. Here's how the result stacked up against the model's call, with the win-probability story and where the value landed.

Four tries. One player, four tries, and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad did more damage on his own than the entire Cowboys side managed between them, as the Warriors ran out 38-20 winners at One NZ Stadium.

Nicoll-Klokstad opened the scoring inside six minutes and added a second three minutes later, the Warriors 10-0 up before the Cowboys had touched the ball in anger. Braidon Burns and Scott Drinkwater hit back either side of the 25-minute mark to bring it to 10-8, and Nicoll-Klokstad's third try, in the 33rd minute, was the difference between the sides at the break: 14-10.

That scoreline flattered the Cowboys given how the second half went. Nicoll-Klokstad completed his four-try haul in the 47th minute, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak crossed seven minutes later, and by the time Jason Taumalolo had been sent to the bin at 52 minutes the margin had blown out past two scores. Adam Pompey and Taine Tuaupiki added late tries either side of a second Burns effort, with Jeremiah Nanai's 76th-minute try only tidying up the final score, not troubling it.

The stat sheet backs up what the scoreboard suggests: this was won with the ball, not without it. Warriors ran for 1,891 metres to the Cowboys' 1,404 and racked up 596 post-contact metres against 380, the kind of gap that comes from repeatedly getting go-forward on first contact. Ten line breaks to six, thirteen offloads to ten. Warriors also held 55% of possession and completed at 80% to the Cowboys' 78%, so they had the ball more and did more with it.

Not everything points the Warriors' way. The Cowboys actually won the tackle-break count, 34 to 27, and defended at a tidier 89.5% effective rate against the Warriors' 86%, missing only 27 tackles to the home side's 34. It's a strange thing to see in a team that shipped 38 points, but it tells you the game wasn't lost in the tackle so much as it was lost in field position and finishing.

None of it will surprise anyone who looked at the pre-match numbers. The Warriors came in rated well clear across the park, 1108 to 921 in the halves and 1106 to 944 at hooker, and that class showed up exactly where you'd expect: in busted line breaks and quick strike tries. The Cowboys arrived off two wins from their last five and conceding an average of 25.8 points a game, and 20 more here did nothing to fix that trend.

Alphr's model had Warriors as 71% favourites and pegged the margin at 12.8 points on a total of 46. The actual result, 38-20, blew past that projection by six points but landed on the right side of the line, with Warriors covering the 8.5-point spread comfortably. On a night when one player alone outscored the entire opposition, calling the winner was the easy part. Picking the exact size of the beating was always going to be the harder ask.
