**New York Giants vs Dallas Cowboys Prediction & Tips | NFL Week 1 2026**

_By Ben Dunlop · Published: 6 Sept 2026, 06:57 pm_

New York Giants 28–20 Dallas Cowboys in NFL Week 1 at MetLife Stadium. Here's how the result stacked up against the model's call, with the win-probability story and where the value landed.

A 96-yard gap on the ground is what won this one: New York Giants ran for 165, Dallas Cowboys managed 69, and the Giants beat the Cowboys 28-20 at MetLife Stadium off the back of it.

That backfield edge was there in the ratings before kick-off, 59 to 44 in New York's favour, and it showed up exactly where you'd expect. Cam Skattebo did the heavy lifting with 81 yards on 18 carries, and he opened the scoring himself, a touchdown with 6:40 left in the first that had New York up 6-0 before Dallas had settled in.

Dallas hit back through CeeDee Lamb midway through the second to make it 7-6, briefly the closest they'd get. But Isaiah Likely answered with 20 seconds left in the half to push it to 14-7 at the break, and that was the start of a stretch New York owned. Likely struck again early in the third, 6:59 on the clock, and suddenly it was 20-7. Javonte Williams got one back for Dallas late in the third, but Devin Singletary restored the three-score buffer early in the fourth, 27-14, before Williams's second touchdown with 5:21 left made the final margin look tighter than the game actually was.

The through-the-air numbers back up the ground story rather than contradict it. Jaxson Dart went 23-of-29 for 230 yards and 3 touchdowns, a tidy, efficient day that let the run game do the damage underneath it, 42% of New York's total yards came on the ground. Dak Prescott threw for 175 on 22-of-34 with 2 touchdowns and an interception, and he did it behind a line that gave up two sacks while New York's got home zero times. Total yards finished 395 to 244, first downs 25 to 16. Dallas simply couldn't sustain drives the way New York could.

Likely was the standout with the ball in his hands, 8 catches for 78 yards and those two scores, and between him and Skattebo, New York had multiple ways to hurt Dallas all afternoon. Dallas's issue wasn't a lack of scoring, Javonte Williams found the line twice and Lamb chipped in once, it was that they couldn't stop conceding points at the other end, and their pass rush, rated a modest 47 against New York's 57, only found Dart's blindside zero times while New York's defence got there twice on Prescott.

Dallas came in on the back of a rough run, one win in their last five against New York's two, and an average margin of minus-9.8 compared to New York's plus-2.4. Form suggested this could go either way, and on paper, so did the model. Alphr had Dallas as 51% favourites, expecting them by 0.4 points on a combined total of 49. The total landed almost bang on, 48 points in the end, within a point. The margin was reasonable in shape but not in direction, New York won by 8 rather than losing by less than a point, which is about as notable a miss as a coin-flip prediction can produce. Three calls, one right. Wins and misses, all of it, and this week the ground game did the talking.

### Match Preview (pre-match read)

Dallas Cowboys shade this one at 51%, which tells you straight up it's about as line ball as the model gets. The single biggest driver is the ratings gap: Cowboys sit at 1456 on the ELO ladder, Giants at 1419, a 37-point edge that's carrying more weight than anything else in the model's head.

Break it down by position and the picture's messier than the headline number suggests. Dallas Cowboys have the better Quarterback rating, 61 to 52, and a stronger Receiving Corps, 56 to 46, plus the clear Special Teams edge, 82 to 66. New York Giants hit back with the better Backfield, 59 to 44, a stronger Pass Rush, 57 to 47, and the edge in the Secondary, 56 to 51. Three factors favour New York Giants outright, Team Rating and Quarterback favour Dallas Cowboys, and Rest Advantage is a wash. So the model's leaning on ELO and the quarterback spot to override a Giants side that actually wins more of the individual battles.

History doesn't do New York Giants any favours either. Dallas Cowboys have won 10 of the last 12 meetings between these two. The exception was the most recent one: New York Giants took that Week 18 clash 34-17 at this same MetLife Stadium.

Form is where it gets interesting again. New York Giants finished 2025 at 4-13, but their last five went LLLWW, a genuine uptick to close the year. Dallas Cowboys finished 7-9-1 but limped home LLLWL. Giants averaged 22.4 points for and 25.8 against across the season; Cowboys scored more, 27.7 a game, but leaked a lot more too, 30.1 against. Strip it back to the last five and Giants averaged 23.4 for and just 21 against, a positive margin of 2.4. Cowboys' last five read 24 for and 33.8 against, a margin of minus 9.8. On recent form, this is a Giants team trending the right way against a Cowboys outfit that hasn't sorted its defence out.

Jaxson Dart takes the reins for New York Giants, Dak Prescott still running things for Dallas Cowboys. John Harbaugh coaches the Giants, Brian Schottenheimer the Cowboys, both sides on level rest at seven days apiece. It's a divisional opener at MetLife Stadium, outdoors on fieldturf, which never hurts the theatre of these things even in Week 1.

The model's predicted margin is Dallas Cowboys by just 0.4, with a combined total of 49. The market has Cowboys as -2.5 favourites with a total line of 47.5, so the model actually sees this as tighter than the market does, and leaning a touch under where the market's total sits.

In the market, Dallas Cowboys are priced at $1.68 and New York Giants at $2.24, with Cowboys the clear market favourite. The model's own read on that head-to-head price shows an edge of minus 9.0%, meaning it thinks Cowboys are shorter than they should be. It likes the New York Giants side of the margin line better, at $2.00 for the 2.5 points, good for a model edge of plus 1.3%. The total, over 48.5 at $1.89, comes back at minus 2.3%.

On the touchdown markets, Javonte Williams is the standout anytime scorer at $1.65 with the model giving him a 56% chance, and Cam Skattebo isn't far behind at $2.25 and 54%. Malik Nabers ($2.70, 37%) and CeeDee Lamb ($2.45, 37%) are next in line, with Jaxson Dart himself at $3.30 for 36% and George Pickens at $2.70 for 35%. First scorer is a longer shot across the board, Williams the pick of that bunch at $5.50 for a 10% chance.

Net it out and this is about as close as a Week 1 preview gets. New York Giants have won the recent form battle and lead on Pass Rush and Secondary, but the model's backing the ELO gap and the Quarterback edge to just get Dallas Cowboys home. Call it a coin flip that fell narrowly one way, not a verdict.
