**Detroit Lions vs New Orleans Saints Prediction & Tips | NFL Week 1 2026**

_By Ben Dunlop · Published: 6 Sept 2026, 06:57 pm_

Detroit Lions 31–30 New Orleans Saints in NFL Week 1 at Ford Field. Here's how the result stacked up against the model's call, with the win-probability story and where the value landed.

Seven points at half-time looked comfortable. Then Detroit went and made it look ordinary, and New Orleans spent the rest of the night proving it wasn't.

Detroit led just 7-0 at the break, a stat line that undersold what was coming. Jahmyr Gibbs opened the scoring in the first quarter and then broke the game open in the third, scoring again at 11:14 to make it 13-0 before Amon-Ra St. Brown added another four minutes later to push it to 20-0. That's 13 unanswered points in a single quarter, and at that stage this had the shape of a rout.

New Orleans had other ideas. Kendre Miller got them on the board at the 4:27 mark, Devaughn Vele followed with 28 seconds left in the third, and by the end of the quarter it was 21-14. Juwan Johnson's touchdown with 1:07 left in the fourth levelled it at 24-24, and the game went to overtime never really settling down again. St. Brown's second score put Detroit up 30-24 in the extra period, Noah Fant answered for New Orleans, and Detroit escaped 31-30. One score, the whole way through.

The yardage says New Orleans should have won this. They put up 501 total yards to Detroit's 371, and Tyler Shough threw for 410 with 3 touchdowns, finding Chris Olave 10 times for 182. But three turnovers against Detroit's one is the sort of gap that erases a 130-yard advantage on the stat sheet, and it did here. Detroit's pass rush also had a say, five sacks to New Orleans' one, and that pressure is presumably a fair chunk of why Shough threw two picks to go with his three touchdowns.

Detroit's route was different and simpler: 165 rushing yards, better than a third of their total output, with Gibbs doing the heavy lifting at 156 yards on 29 carries and two scores. Jared Goff didn't need to do much, 26 of 39 for 206 and two touchdowns, and he didn't have to when the ground game and the pass rush were both firing.

Going in, the ratings had Detroit's pass rush and receiving corps as the edges that mattered, 52 to 51 and 59 to 52, with New Orleans only clearly ahead on special teams, 67 to 58. Detroit's five sacks and its receiving touchdowns from St. Brown suggest those small edges showed up when it counted. New Orleans arrived on a WWWWL run and averaging just 17.6 points conceded across their last five, numbers that make surrendering 31 here a rough outlier. Detroit came in 2-3 in their last five and conceding nearly 28 a game, so a shootout that went to overtime was arguably always on the cards for them.

Alphr's model had Detroit at 74% to win with a 7.7-point margin and a combined total of 58. The lopsided win never happened, the final margin was one point, but the model's instinct that this would be high-scoring held up well, with the actual total of 61 landing close to that 58 projection and comfortably clearing the 49.5 over line. Right team, wrong margin, right shape of a game. That's about as fair a scorecard as this one deserves.

### Match Preview (pre-match read)

Detroit Lions are the model's pick here, 74% to beat New Orleans Saints, and the number doing the heavy lifting is the ratings gap. Detroit Lions sit at 1556 on the ELO ladder, New Orleans Saints at 1433. That's 123 points clear, and Team Rating is the one factor the model leans on hardest.

Everything else is closer than the headline number suggests. Quarterback, Pass Rush, Secondary and Rest Advantage are all rated even. Where Detroit Lions do hold a genuine edge is the Receiving Corps, 59 to 52, and Jared Goff edges Tyler Shough 64 to 61 at quarterback. New Orleans Saints actually shade the Backfield, 51 to 50, and thump Detroit Lions on Special Teams, 67 to 58. Not nothing.

The history is dead level. Twelve meetings, six apiece. Last time these two met, back in 2023, Detroit Lions won 33-28 on the road at the Superdome. No home ground grudge to lean on here either way, this is the first look at each other since.

Form is the awkward bit for backers of the favourite. Detroit Lions finished 2025 at 9-8, 5-3 at home, but limped out WLLLW and missed the playoffs. New Orleans Saints were the worse team overall, 6-11, 3-6 on the road, but they closed the year WWWWL, four wins from five. Recent Form is explicitly the factor tilting toward New Orleans Saints, and their defensive numbers back it up: 17.6 points conceded a game across that stretch against Detroit Lions' 27.8. Detroit Lions scored more, 26.2 to 24.8, but leaked more too.

Dan Campbell's Detroit Lions host Kellen Moore's New Orleans Saints at Ford Field, a dome on fieldturf, so weather's not a variable worth thinking about. Both sides come in on seven days' rest, nothing in it there. This is a Week 1 opener for the 2026 season, so every form line above is really just how last year finished, take it as a guide, not gospel.

On the score, the model has Detroit Lions winning by 7.7 with a combined total near 58. The market's spread has Detroit Lions -7 and the total at 49.5, so the model is calling a slightly higher shootout than the market expects. Detroit Lions price up at $1.31, New Orleans Saints out at $3.60, and the model reckons that's about right: it sees a -2.5% edge on the Lions moneyline and a -4.5% edge on the -6.5 margin line, meaning it's not fussed about backing the favourite at either number. The one place it does see daylight is the total, Over 49.5 at $1.85 carries a +3.5% edge in the model's eyes.

For the scorer markets, Jahmyr Gibbs anytime touchdown is priced at $1.37 and the model gives him 64%, the standout play on the card. Travis Etienne Jr. anytime at $2.12 (51%) and Amon-Ra St. Brown anytime at $2.15 (51%) both come in as coin-flip propositions the model likes. First touchdown scorer is longer odds all round, Gibbs first at $4.30 with the model at 13% is the pick of that bunch.

So it nets out like this: the ratings and the receiving corps say Detroit Lions comfortably, the recent form says New Orleans Saints have been building something. For the underdog to cause bother, that four-from-five finishing run needs to be the real story and not just a soft schedule wearing off. The model's read is that Detroit Lions get there, by just over a converted touchdown, in a game with more points than the market line suggests.
