**Cincinnati Bengals vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers Prediction & Tips | NFL Week 1 2026**

_By Ben Dunlop · Published: 6 Sept 2026, 06:57 pm_

Cincinnati Bengals 33–27 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in NFL Week 1 at Paycor Stadium. Here's how the result stacked up against the model's call, with the win-probability story and where the value landed.

Cincinnati led 24-10 at the break and had every reason to feel comfortable. By full time it was 33-27, and Tampa Bay had made a game of it that the scoreboard at half-time didn't suggest was coming.

The Bengals did their damage early. Knight opened the scoring, Mike Gesicki added another, and Chase Brown's touchdown with 5:32 left in the second quarter pushed it out to 20-3. Tampa Bay's only response before the break came from Bucky Irving, and Cincinnati took a 14-point cushion into the sheds.

Tampa Bay didn't fold. Josiah Trotter got them within seven early in the third, and Baker Mayfield's touchdown with 3:19 to go in the fourth trimmed it to 33-27. That's as close as it got. Cincinnati had scored 24 unanswered points across the first half and simply had enough banked to survive a Buccaneers side that kept finding answers but never the equaliser.

The gap in the box score tells you why Cincinnati never really had to sweat it, even while the margin was shrinking. Four turnovers from Tampa Bay against one from Cincinnati is not a stat you overcome, not against a team that outgained you 360 yards to 305 and had the better first-down count, 24 to 17. Cincinnati's pass rush got home four times to one, and that pressure fed directly into a scoreboard the Buccaneers spent the second half chasing.

Individually, Joe Burrow was efficient rather than spectacular, 25-of-35 for 254 yards with a touchdown and a pick. Baker Mayfield matched him for accuracy, 23-of-28 for 216 and a touchdown of his own, but efficient passing doesn't fix four giveaways. Chase Brown was the best player on the ground, 56 yards on 16 carries and a score, while Mike Gesicki was the standout target for either side, 5 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown.

None of this should surprise anyone who looked at the positional numbers going in. Cincinnati held clear edges at quarterback, 59 to 49, in the backfield, 68 to 49, and in the secondary, 62 to 49. Tampa Bay's one real advantage was pass rush, 58 to 52, and it showed up in the sack count running the other way, one to Cincinnati's four. Form lined up too: Cincinnati arrived at 2-1 across their last five with a positive average margin, Tampa Bay at 1-1 and leaking points on average.

Alphr's model had Cincinnati at 60% to win, by 3.1 points, with a combined total of 59. The actual margin came in at six, the total at 60. Two out of three isn't bad reading, and the over call on 50.5 landed too. If anything the model undersold how comfortable Cincinnati's control of the first half would be, and undersold how much Tampa Bay would claw back once the turnovers stopped piling up.

Cincinnati leaves Paycor Stadium 33-27 winners, built on a first-half surge that Tampa Bay's turnover count made too big to chase down.

### Match Preview (pre-match read)

Cincinnati Bengals get the nod at 60%, and that's despite the ELO ratings actually favouring Tampa Bay Buccaneers by 4 points, 1480 to 1476. Worth saying plainly: the model isn't backing the better-rated team here. It's backing the team it reckons is doing more of the right things right now.

The reason is spread across three factors: Quarterback, Secondary and Recent Form. Cincinnati Bengals hold a big edge at quarterback, 59 to 49, which is Joe Burrow against Baker Mayfield, and an even bigger one in the secondary, 62 to 49. Backfield is the largest gap on the sheet, 68 to 49. Tampa Bay Buccaneers hit back with the one factor that matters most when things get scrappy, Pass Rush, where they lead 58 to 52. Special teams tilts Cincinnati Bengals' way too, 70 to 63.

History leans towards Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for what it's worth this far back. Across the last seven meetings it's Tampa Bay Buccaneers 4, Cincinnati Bengals 3, and the last time these two met, back in 2022, Cincinnati Bengals won 34-23 at Raymond James Stadium. That was a different team in a different building, so treat it as trivia more than form.

Speaking of form, this is where the model's lean makes more sense. Cincinnati Bengals finished 2025 at 6-11, missed the playoffs, but closed the year LLWWL and were putting up 24.4 points a game to 28.9 against. Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished better on paper at 8-9, also missed the postseason, but limped home LLLLW, scoring 22.4 and conceding 24.2. Two wins from the last five for Cincinnati Bengals against one for Tampa Bay Buccaneers is the sort of thing the model notices.

Rest is a non-issue, both sides in on 7 days. Zac Taylor is still running things in Cincinnati, Todd Bowles still has the clipboard in Tampa Bay. This is Week 1 of a new season, so every number above is really just a hangover from how 2025 finished, not a guarantee of how Monday goes.

The model's own number is Cincinnati Bengals by 3.1, with the total sitting around 59. The market's line is a bit more generous to the home side, Cincinnati Bengals -3.5, with the total set at 52.5. So the model likes Cincinnati Bengals to win, but by less than the market's giving them, and it expects more points to go up than the total line suggests.

On price, Cincinnati Bengals are $1.52 and Tampa Bay Buccaneers $2.60, with Cincinnati Bengals the market favourite as well as the model's pick. The model actually sees a small negative edge there, -6.5%, which just means it thinks Cincinnati Bengals are slightly shorter than they should be. The margin market has Tampa Bay Buccaneers at $1.97 on the +3.5 line, essentially fair by the model's read, -0.5% edge. The one number that stands out is the total: Over 50.5 at $1.89 carries a +4.8% edge, and given the model's own total sits at 59, that's the angle worth a second look.

On the scoring props, Chase Brown is the standout anytime touchdown play at $1.83, with the model giving him 57%. Bucky Irving ($2.65, 48%), Tee Higgins ($2.35, 46%) and Ja'Marr Chase ($1.92, 45%) round out the shortlist, with Kenny Gainwell further out at $2.95 (33%) and Jalen McMillan a longer shot at $4.70 (28%). First touchdown is trickier by nature, with Chase Brown the pick of that bunch at $7.00 and 11%.

None of this makes Tampa Bay Buccaneers a soft touch. They hold the better team rating and the pass rush edge, and if that unit gets after Joe Burrow early, the shape of this whole thing changes. But on quarterback play, secondary strength and the way each side is trending, Cincinnati Bengals are the lean, by a field goal, in a game the model expects to run up a decent total.
