**Detroit Lions vs Minnesota Vikings Prediction and Tips - NFL Week 9, 2025**

_By Ben Dunlop · Published: 3 Nov 2025, 05:00 am_

Detroit Lions 24–27 Minnesota Vikings in NFL Week 9 at Ford Field. Here's how the result stacked up against the model's call, with the win-probability story and where the value landed.

Detroit led at the break, 14-17, and it looked like the sort of half-time deficit a team with 349 total yards eventually erases. It didn't work out that way. Minnesota walked out of Ford Field with the 27-24 win, and the gap between the two sides at full time was exactly what it was at half-time: a field goal.

The Lions never actually got in front after the first quarter. Sam LaPorta opened the scoring early, Detroit up 6-0, and from there Minnesota answered every push. Justin Jefferson and T.J. Hockenson had the Vikings up 14-7 by the 4:13 mark of the first, and even when David Montgomery hit back to make it 13-14 in the second, Minnesota closed the half back in front. J.J. McCarthy's touchdown with 6:13 left in the third stretched it to 14-23, and although Jameson Williams pulled Detroit within three with two minutes to go, that's as close as it got.

The stat sheet reads like a team that should have won. Detroit out-gained Minnesota 349 to 285, threw for 284 against the Vikings' 143, and won first downs 25-23. Jared Goff was 25-of-37 for those 284 yards and 2 touchdowns, Amon-Ra St. Brown hauled in 9 catches for 97. By most of the ledger, this was Detroit's game.

Except for the one column that decided it: rushing. Minnesota ran for 142 yards to Detroit's 65, and Aaron Jones alone put up 78 on just 9 carries. That ground game let Minnesota control the clock and manufacture points without needing McCarthy to do much beyond his line of 14-of-25 for 143 and 2 touchdowns, albeit with a pick. Offensive EPA tells the same story from the other direction: Detroit at -0.4, Minnesota at a worse -1.2, meaning neither offence was efficient by the model's measure, but Minnesota's was uglier and still walked away with more points. That's the sort of number that should have Detroit's coaches asking where the red zone trips went missing.

Pre-match, the read was firmly Detroit. A 1660 ELO rating to Minnesota's 1510, a 71% win probability, and a predicted margin of 5.9 points, backed by clear positional edges everywhere except special teams: quarterback 56 to 22, backfield 72 to 48, secondary 68 to 55. Recent form pointed the same way, Detroit's four wins from five against Minnesota's two, and a plus-9.4 average margin against the Vikings' 1.2. Minnesota came in on a WLWLL run, hardly the profile of an upset side.

None of that mattered once the whistle went. The model had the total right, 50 points projected against 51 actual, about as clean a total call as you'll see. The margin was reasonable too, 5.9 points forecast against a 3-point actual gap, just pointing the wrong way. Wins and misses, all of it, and this one's filed under misses. Detroit did most things better on paper and still lost by a field goal, which is really just the game reminding everyone that yards and first downs don't show up on the scoreboard, points do.

**Model Report Card**

Minnesota Vikings defied the model's 71% prediction for Detroit Lions, a notable upset. The predicted margin of 5.9 was reasonable against the actual 3-point result. Total score prediction of 50 was close to the actual 51, within 1 points. The model went 2/3 on this match. The over 47.5 total call was correct.

**Referee Watch**

Clay Martin officiated this match (127 career games). The combined score of 51 points was 5 points above Clay Martin's career average of 46. Minnesota Vikings bucked the trend, Detroit Lions historically win 56% of games under Clay Martin, but couldn't convert that edge today.
