**Washington Commanders vs Las Vegas Raiders Prediction and Tips - NFL Week 3, 2025**

_By Ben Dunlop · Published: 22 Sept 2025, 03:00 am_

Washington Commanders 41–24 Las Vegas Raiders in NFL Week 3 at FedExField. Here's how the result stacked up against the model's call, with the win-probability story and where the value landed.

Two different ideas about how to win a football game showed up at FedExField, and only one of them actually worked. Washington Commanders wanted the ball on the ground and the clock moving. Las Vegas Raiders wanted it in the air and moving fast. Final score: Commanders 41, Raiders 24, and the gap between those two philosophies was the difference.

The Raiders actually won the yardage battle, 382 to 408 isn't a landslide, and Geno Smith threw for 289 against Marcus Mariota's 207. But 201 of Washington's 408 yards came on the ground, roughly half their output, and that kind of ball control changes the shape of a game. Jeremy McNichols needed just 4 carries to rack up 78 yards and a touchdown. That's not a stat line, that's a licence to keep running it.

The scoreboard tells the story of a team that never really let go. Mariota opened it with a touchdown before the 12 minute mark of the first, Washington led 7-3 after one, then pulled away to 20-10 at the break behind a McNichols score with under four minutes left in the half. By the end of the third it was 34-10. Tucker's first Raiders touchdown had cut it to one score early in the second quarter, but Washington kept answering, and by three quarters in the margin had ballooned to 24 points.

Tucker gave the Raiders their only consistent weapon. Three touchdowns, 8 catches, 145 yards, all the receiving damage in the building funnelled through one man. He scored twice more in the fourth quarter, at 13:03 and again at 3:45, dragging Las Vegas back within 12 points at 34-22, then within 10. It got mildly interesting for about three minutes. Then Luke McCaffrey scored with 2:12 left and the game was done.

The numbers explain why Washington could afford that late wobble. Five sacks to one is a beating up front, and an expected points edge of 14.8 to 2.9, nearly 12 points clear on a per-snap basis, says Washington's offense was simply more efficient every time it touched the ball. They managed all that despite losing the turnover battle 1-0, which says a lot about how thoroughly they controlled everything else.

Pre-match, the ratings had Washington favoured by 5.1 points off a 1549 to 1410 ELO edge, with Washington's backfield rated 58 to Las Vegas's 34, the widest gap on the sheet. That backfield edge showed up exactly where you'd expect, in the run game and the clock. The pass rush rating had Las Vegas slightly ahead, 59 to 52, but Washington's front got home five times anyway.

Alphr's model had leaned Raiders at 54%, and a combined total of 45. Neither read the actual shape of it. Sixty-five points were scored, not 45, and Washington's ball control won by 17, well beyond the 5.1 point margin projected. A reasonable pre-match lean, comprehensively overtaken by five different Washington scorers and one very busy Raiders receiver who couldn't do it alone.

**Model Report Card**

Washington Commanders defied the model's 54% prediction for Las Vegas Raiders, a notable result. The predicted margin of 5.1 was reasonable against the actual 17-point result. The game's 65 points came in 20 points higher than the predicted 45. The model went 1/3 on this match. The over 43.5 total call was correct.

**Referee Watch**

Shawn Hochuli officiated this match (130 career games). The combined score of 65 points was 20 points above Shawn Hochuli's career average of 45. Washington Commanders bucked the trend, Las Vegas Raiders historically win 71% of games under Shawn Hochuli, but couldn't convert that edge today.
