**Los Angeles Rams vs Houston Texans Prediction and Tips - NFL Week 1, 2025**

_By Ben Dunlop · Published: 8 Sept 2025, 06:25 am_

Los Angeles Rams 14–9 Houston Texans in NFL Week 1 at SoFi Stadium. Here's how the result stacked up against the model's call, with the win-probability story and where the value landed.

Houston Texans' offence finished the day at minus 3.0 EPA, against a Los Angeles Rams figure of minus 0.2. That gap is the whole story of a 14-9 Rams win at SoFi Stadium, a game where the yardage battle was close enough to be a non-event but the stuff that actually turns yards into points wasn't close at all.

The Texans led early, up 3-0 after the first quarter, and were still ahead 9-7 at half-time. Kyren Williams pulled the Rams level with 57 seconds left in the second, capping a drive that made it 6-6 before the extra point put Los Angeles in front by two, only for Houston to close the half back on top 9-7. Then the third quarter turned it. Davis Allen's touchdown with 12:33 left made it 13-9, the Rams added the extra point to go 14-9, and neither side scored again. Houston had the ball for the rest of the night and nothing to show for it.

Two turnovers against one is where that EPA number comes from. The Rams protected the football, Houston didn't, and every year of watching this sport tells you which side of that ledger tends to win low-scoring games. Total yards were basically a coin flip, 317 to 302, but yards without points are just a stat line. Houston ran for 114 to LA's 72 and still walked away with nine points to show for it. That's a rushing edge that meant nothing without finishing.

Through the air Matthew Stafford went 21-of-29 for 245 yards and the one score, a tidy day against C.J. Stroud's 19-of-27 for 188 with an interception. That interception is half of Houston's turnover problem right there, and against a Rams receiving corps rated 61 to Houston's 56 coming in, Stroud didn't have the connections to make the yardage count. Puka Nacua was the target of the night regardless of team colours, 10 catches for 130 yards, and Kyren Williams did the rest on the ground with 66 yards on 18 carries plus the touchdown.

Houston's pass rush and secondary were meant to be the difference-makers here, rated 56 and 69 against LA's 57 and 60, and for a half it looked that way with the Texans up 9-7. Three sacks apiece says the pressure was mutual, but Houston's offence never turned its share of stops into anything more than three field goals worth of production, kept off the board entirely once Allen's touchdown put LA in front for good.

The form lines told part of this before kickoff. Rams arrived 3-2 in their last five with a positive average margin of 4.2, Texans 2-3 and minus 3.4, and Sunday split the difference before LA's cleaner ball security decided it. Alphr's model had the Rams at 56% to win, with Houston actually favoured by 1.7 on the projected margin. The final gap of five points wasn't far off that number, just pointed the other way. The predicted total of 48 was nowhere close, with the sides combining for 23, a reminder that two capable offences can cancel each other out just as easily as they can light up a scoreboard.
