Adelaide Crows 79–62 Melbourne in AFL Round 15 at Adelaide Oval. Here's how the result stacked up against the model's call, with the win-probability story and where the value landed.

Alphr's model had Melbourne winning this by 3.4 points, on a combined total near 170. Adelaide Crows won it by 17, and the two sides combined for 141. Both numbers wrong, and the direction of the margin wrong too. That's a miss worth sitting with for a second before getting into how it actually played out.

The pre-match ratings weren't silly, either. Melbourne came in rated well clear at the ruck (1461 to 1056) and comfortably ahead in the midfield (1359 to 1085), and for three quarters that read held up fine. Melbourne led at every change: 30-22, 36-35, and 56-54 at the last break. A side with that much midfield grunt sitting on a two-point lead heading into the final term looks like a side about to close it out.

Instead Adelaide Crows outscored them 25-6 in the last quarter to win 79-62. Nothing in the ladder-strength numbers predicted a run like that, which is the honest bit here: the model saw the midfield and ruck edges and backed them to matter more than they did.

Where Adelaide Crows actually won it was everywhere else. They had 410 disposals to 333 and used it at 78.8% efficiency against Melbourne's 68.5%, a gap that explains a lot on its own. They also won the marks battle in a landslide, 138 to 60, including 11 marks inside 50 to Melbourne's 5. That's a side taking the simple option and hitting it, over and over, while Melbourne's ball use broke down under pressure.

And there was plenty of that pressure. Adelaide Crows laid 67 tackles to 44 and picked off 76 intercepts to Melbourne's 63. Melbourne still won the clearance count 39-31 and edged inside 50s 56-55, so the midfield edge was real. It just didn't translate once the ball hit the forward line, where Adelaide Crows' defensive read and clean hands took over.

Form lines make the eventual result less shocking than the final margin suggests. Adelaide Crows arrived on a 4-1 last-five with an average winning margin of 30.8 points, a side used to blowing games open. Melbourne's form was patchier, 3-2 with an average margin of just 8. Backing Melbourne by 3.4 on the day was reasonable on ratings, but it underweighted just how much bigger Adelaide Crows' recent wins had been.

On the scorecard, the model went 2 from 4. It got the under right, with the 141-point total comfortably beneath the 178.5 line, and Melbourne covered the 19.5-point spread despite losing outright. It missed the winner and it missed the margin, and both misses trace back to the same thing: a strong Melbourne engine room that dominated clearances but couldn't turn it into scoreboard pressure against a side that took its opportunities cleanly and shut the game down late.

Wins and misses, all of it. This one's filed under misses, and a fairly instructive one at that.

**Model Report Card**

Adelaide Crows defied the model's 55% prediction for Melbourne, a notable result. The margin model missed here, predicting 3.4 but the actual margin was 17 points. The game's 141 points came in 29 points lower than the predicted 170. Adelaide Crows trailed 35–36 at half-time before staging a second-half comeback to win 79–62. The model went 2/4 on this match. Melbourne covered the 19.5-point line. The under 178.5 total call was correct.

### Match Preview (pre-match read)

Melbourne are the call at 55%, but Adelaide Crows stay live at 45%. The ratings say otherwise: Adelaide Crows sit 193 ELO points clear, 1702 to 1510, so the model is backing Melbourne against the ratings gap. Form leans Adelaide Crows' way: 4 from their last 5, against 3 for Melbourne.

On paper Adelaide Crows shade it, ahead on 6 of 7 factors including ELO Difference, Recent Win Rate and Forward Line ELO. The model still sides with Melbourne, which says Midfield ELO carry the most weight. The margin model has Melbourne by 3.4, with the two sides combining for about 170. Lean Melbourne, but it shapes as a genuine contest.
