West Coast Eagles had the better of the opening two quarters and, for a while, looked like the team in control. They led by six points at half time, 31-25, built on staying assured in that first term where they trailed only 14-5 and then out-scored Melbourne 26-11 in the second quarter. There were signs of a defensive read hehind the ball. West Coast finished with 70 intercepts to 58 and out-tackled Melbourne 58 to 56 for the match, numbers that show a side working hard without the footy and reading the play well in patches.
